SCANNING AND SKIMMING

Hey guys! today we gave our beautiful eyes some exercise. haha. we learned about how to do scanning and skimming. scanning and skimming is usually used when you are reading and to find important points in an essay. scanning is a selective reading skill to locate facts and answers to specific questions. you do not read every word on the page because you want to save time. you can also scan a timetable, pages of a dictionary, chart, tables, and etc.. skimming is a reading skill that refers to only reading the main point instead the whole passage to find out the writer's point of view.

steps for scanning:
1) State the specific information you are looking for.
2) Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for the number.
3) Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain information you are looking for.
4) Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.

steps for skimming:
1) Read the title
2) Read the introduction or the first paragraph
3) Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
4) Read any headings and sub-headings.
5) Notice any pictures, charts or graph.
6) Notice any italicized or boldface word or phrases.
7) Read the summary or last paragraph.

after we have done learning this techniques, miss zu gave us exercises and we have to use scanning and skimming to find the answers. now that i have learned about it, i will use it when i do my exams so that i will save some of my time! :)
